Tools You Can’t Do Without #1

Let’s suppose you are working on a homework paper and you have found some great information on a web page. You highlight the information and you hit CTRL + C to copy it. Next, you go to your word processing program and you hit CTRL + V to paste it into the document. But what happens? You end up with some weird tables and none of the text matches. Not only that, but now your document is a mess!

Easy Workaround: Open up Notepad, and CTRL + V. In fact, put all the useful text that you find into it. Why? Because Notepad strips all the formatting and that is what is making your homework look like a disaster.

Now you can select all the text you placed into Notepad, CTRL + C to copy or CTRL + X to cut. Now paste into your Word document. The text appears just as your default in your document without any weird formatting. Usually what I do is place all the copied text from the Internet into Notepad before I even go to Word.

There are many variations to Notepad, one Open Source version called Notepad ++ (Available here : http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm) is a free source code editor that is written in C++ and uses pure Win32 API and STL which ensures a higher execution speed and smaller program size. It also has Syntax Highlighting and Syntax Folding and auto completion.

One Technique for Divx .AVI to DVD

HOW TO TURN
THOSE .AVI’s YOU’VE COLLECTED INTO ENTERTAINING DVDS!

This is just one way (of many) to make a dvd out of all the .avi’s that you are finding all over the Internet (we don’t need to know how you found them) or all those digital movies that you are taking with your digital camera. This is the technique that I use, it is the most stress-free way to get it done that I have found.

SOFTWARE:

ConvertXtoDVD3 - Go the the website for more information. You can download a trial but it will have a text line at the top of the DVD for the first 5 minutes of the DVD, so I recommend you get the full version.

HARDWARE:

My Laptop is a 1.7 GHZ
DVD Rewritable Drive & Nero Installed
Blank DVD in the Drive and Ready to go!

If you are installing ConvertXtoDVD for the first time, it will ask you if you want PAL or NTSC. If you are located in America, choose NTSC or you will not be able to view the PAL in your dvd player unless your DVD is PAL.

STEP 1: Open the ConvertXtoDVD software. To find your video, select the green plus button and select your video files.

STEP 2: Find your files. When I create a dvd, I put about 1.5 GB on it. By the time your .AVI’s have converted to VSO, you should be able to fill up one blank DVD.

STEP 3: Now that you have added all of your .AVI’s it is time to customize some of your other settings.

EXPLANATION OF SOME OF THE SETTINGS:

GENERAL: Pay close attention to the output folder. I usually click the folder (the one I circled in Orange) and create a folder on the Desktop called “DVD” that way if something goes wrong and the DVD doesn’t burn at the end of the encoding process I can still use Nero to burn the VSO. It is also a good way to remember where the DVD VSO ended up when you were done. You will want to delete when you have your freshly working DVD in your posession, these files take up 4.8 GB on your hard drive!

CHAPTERS - Allows you to insert a chapter when you want one. You can also uncheck it if you don’t want chapters.

MENU - Choose a menu style that you like. If you have more than one .AVI you will be able to specify what style of menu that you want. There are many other choices to select such as loop. If you select the arrow, you can preview different menu styles. These menus have worked really well for me. If you want to get some customization into your menus, simply create your own using your own images. What I do is copy one of the folders located in
C:\Program Files\vso\ConvertX\3\templates, rename the copy and customize the images inside! When you re-open ConvertX, and search for your theme it will find it. Just keep to the format of the files in the folder, there are image and sound files. I think that this is great if you wish to give a DVD away as a gift. I use Photoshop to edit my files and keep all the images the same size so that nothing is skewed when you go to use your new theme.

SUBTITLES - Allows you to choose a default language for subtitles. I usually just leave this at the default.

TV FORMAT - My DVD player is NTSC so I usually just leave this at the default.

BURNING - Make sure your DVD burner name appears in here. In the past with other software I have had a problem locating my dvd burner and the files were converted left in my output folder and I had to re-open them in another program. In the past with other programs I have installed Nero Burning Rom and this little problem never
occurred after that.

SOUND EFFECTS - I usually just leave this the default. This depends on you however. Maybe applause for the DVD being successfully done?

ENCODING - Allows you to choose the medium recommended setting or low or high. I have been using
high all of this time and didn’t know it. My dvds turn out great though. I see that ConvertX recommends you use the medium setting. It takes up less resources on your pc.

AUDIO - You can increase the sound on your audio if desired.

STEP 4 - Once you are pleased with your setting, hit the convert button and away she goes! Enjoy impressing your friends and family with your DVD creations!

NOTE: Your results may be different, I will also feature other techniques that may work for you later on!

Emergency Internet Access With a Cell Phone

What happens when you have a basic, W315 Motorola (other cell phones work too.) Cell Phone and a laptop (or pc with USB slots)? 14k Internet. I know what you are thinking, that is awfully slow. But what if you are in the middle of the woods like I was last summer with no wifi or even a landline? It’s slow going, but it works.

As it turns out, with the proper software and USB data cable (I used the one that came with my digital camera), your computer will detect your cell phone as a USB modem. The cell phone I was using, the W315 has a USB port similar to the one my digital camera has.

I then downloaded Motorola Phone Tools, or the Motorola USB driver will also work. You will need to install the software first. If you have an older cell phone, I would not recommend updating your Motorola Phone Tools software to the newest version. Although the newest version claims to support W315, mine stopped detecting it. Your situation may be slightly different. I have not tested this technique with other brand phones, I would imagine that the phone would need to have a USB port and phone tools software; so install the software that works for you.

After install, plug in your phone. In my case, I didn’t even need to open up the software, all drivers were present so Windows automatically detected my phone as a USB modem. You could use the software to use Axcess services, but you will likely incur large fees.

My techinique is different. My phone is prepaid with unlimited calls to the favorite number through Alltel. You can usually get this feature in the monthly plans or even the day plans for .75 a day you can choose two features. In advance, I went to the Alltel website or called customer support and set up my favorite number to be the same as my ISP. I have free Internet access through the college, so I used that number as my favorite.

Then I created a new internet connection identifying my “Motorola USB Modem” as the modem used for the Internet connection, input my account information, and voila! I was online at 14k, enough to check and send email. At times, my Internet connection would revert to the dial-up. All I had to do was right click the connection, hit properties and reaffirm the Internet connection to use the Motorola USB Modem. By using my favorite number, I never lost any  of my phone minutes as you can use my favorite number all day long if you have it enabled.

Again, it is not the fastest connection, but it does get you online. I have since donated my W315. What was so cool was, I was able to use this connection all day long without the battery wearing out.  When I went to the Alltel store to sign up for their wireless Internet data plan (I highly recommend it, it is just $69 with insurance to access Internet just about anywhere) and told the representative my little technique, he scratched his head and said, “You were online with a W315 and my favorite number?” He just couldn’t believe it.

You can also get a faster connection this way using EVDO technology.

EVDO:  Evolution data maximized (CMDA2000 1x EVDO) is based on CDMA2000. EVDO supports mobile data communications at speeds ranging from 400 Kbps to 2 Mbps.

This is known as tethering your cell phone to your computer. This technique is far faster than using the Analog phone, but you will still need the Alltel Data Plan or similar plan on your provider.  I have found other information on the Internet that they have a prepaid plan for this, but that was not the case at the Alltel store I went to. Your experience may be different.

Now, if you’re reading this and you don’t have broadband, and you’re considering going with the  Alltel or similar route, you can save money by picking up your own cable instead of opting for the “Wireless Internet Kit” which strangely, includes a cable. All this kit has are cable(s) for hooking your phone to your PC’s USB port, and some software/drivers on a CD.

If you have a phone that has a USB connection on it, just pick up the most affordable USB cable you can find. If not, well, you may want to spend extra for the $60 kit or maybe just upgrade to a new phone? Just make sure it’s an EVDO phone! For the software, all you need are the USB drivers. You can download these drivers directly from Motorola (free registration required to download.) After downloading and installing the drivers, but before hooking your phone to your PC, make sure your phone is set to work as a modem when hooked up via USB, this can be found under the “Connection” settings. Now hook your phone to your PC.

Now, assuming you have your Internet plan turned on, your phone has signal, your drivers are working with the phone, all you need to do to get connected is to setup a new dialup internet connection in Windows For Alltel, the number you need to dial will be “#777″. For username and password, use “[YourPhoneNumber]@alltel.net”, ie: 1235551212@alltel.net. The password should be “alltel”. Hopefully this all works. Your experiences may be different. Double click the connection, hit Dialup and you should be connected!

There are some drawbacks to this method as explained to me by Alltel. Your phone will be tied up, and they do run really hot sometimes.  I do recommend you try these techniques just as a little challenge. You never know when you will be out in the woods and need to check email. Wouldn’t it be nice to have it availabe just in case? It’s like an old friend saying hello, even if it is at 14k.

Wireless Internet Card For the Sticks Blog

OK folks here is a wonderful little gadget that if you are like me can’t live with out, the Internet! This little wonderful thing saved me from going mad with dial up. Its called the Huawei EC228 Wireless Internet Card brought to you by Alltel Wireless. This wonderful wireless card that plugs in through your usb with EVDO rev a capabilities pulled me out of my Internet funk. If you cry with slow mind numbing dial up like I did for 4 years this is the best and  fastest Internet for the sticks.huaweiec228_details.jpg

The reason I applaud it so much is Alltel is the only service we really have in my area and the cable company Charter refuses to put digital in our area, not cost effective so we cannot get DSL here. So  between my cellphones which are on the .75 a day plan which is SWEET,  also my sister has the Wireless Internet Card which is cheaper than DSL. If you think you cant get a plan through Alltel try because we thought we couldn’t but they gave 1 line to us and that’s how we got our Wonderful Internet card. So if you live in the sticks+mind numbing dial up= get ur butt to Alltel and get your very own Wireless card, if Alltel is a choice in wireless in your town.

Yes, today I was an Alltel commercial but hey if you make a living on line don’t get caught with out fast Internet.
